At ~£11 each, it wasn't bad value and if I was to offer just one critique, the food could have been a little hotter when it arrived. The quality of the food was good and reasonable sizes. The menu is regular contemporary pub fare and we ordered the fish and chips and the pulled pork burger (the meat platter for two also looked very good and we had food envy when we saw it arrive at another table). Ordered from the good selection of beer on offer and luckily found seats for two for dinner. Despite the crush, the service was very good with all staff cheerful, available and helpful. We dropped in on a rainy Thursday evening and the place was very busy from people ducking out of the rain and the post-work crowd grabbing a few on their way home. ![]() Grab a beer, sit down and imagine the goings on that have occurred within these walls throughout history. The history of this place alone makes The George Inn worthwhile a visit. Worth the time to dream and enjoy the pin,t as well as, the buzz Sadly, the arrival of the railways, put paid to the coaching inns. Another important fact, while we enjoyed our pint was pondering on this landmark from which thousands of huge wagons left for Sussex, Kent and Surry, running a 24-hour service. It's a cosseting feeling to know that Charles Dickens mentioned the George in 'Little Dorrit'. The George retains this arrangement but you can only drink at the bar, the oldest still has its 18th century interior, with tavern clock, crooked timber floors, two fire places and benches fitted into the walls. The courtyard enabled the coaches to enter and unload in the middle of the building with public rooms for drinking and eating. Shakespeare & his contemporaries would have been familiar with these galleried inns, with rooms on each level, leading to a walkway or gallery. This beauty, started its highway life after the huge fire that destroyed most of Southwark. ![]() If my femme and i were transported to an era where all transportation on land were done by horse, we would have been familiar with this style of building, common throughout the land.
